Mark Davis has designed a number of chess boards for multiple players, and for two with round or spherical boards. Look to his place for beautifull but large gifs (the picture below is compressed both in size as in number of colors: the original is more beautifull but needs some downloading time). When I looked at his site, descriptions of the games were still missing.
