Well as far as I can see, Chess in the Round didn't touch on extending the definition of 'forward' - Pawns carried on moving as in FIDE Chess. A case could be made for relaxing the definition of a long-range 'forward' move to any having at least one forward step, but that doesn't address the Gold or Silver. Or perhaps there is room for a 'Chess in the Further Round', in which Pawns can indeed move one step ringwise or forward without capturing, or capture by a diagonal step with a forward or ringwise component or both. Hey, that's yet another new variant...
A restriction of one Pawn to a file, even when moving ringwise, might prove interesting. The Pawns would develop as in the original game, but after one is captured its neighbors would be able to shift to its file. And with their ringwise move, the Pawns now are able to defend one another. So a form of Pawn structure might be developed. This is probably essential with the increased power of the other pieces in this game.
Pawns cannot move into the same file as friendly Pawns, even through a regular move, perhaps?
Since it is possible with the ringwise move of the Pawn for more than one to end up in a 'file', the standard Shogi rule of only one Pawn to a file might not be applicable. Maybe a restriction of nine Pawns on the field?
