A clarification: Backgammon does indeed involve a great deal of skill--I know, I play the game. In fact, I chose it as the opposite end of the spectrum because it has the highest proportion of luck among games that have a high proportion of skill
Are you saying Backgammon is all luck? This is not a thing to discuss in this site, but I can tell you skill is highly important in Backgammon.
I think this game really captures the spirit of Shou Dou Qi but is much more playable. I like the moderate amount of randomness--small enough that you can take it into account in your tactical calculations. On the skill vs. luck spectrum Mouse and Elephant will be closer to Chess than to Backgammon--an area of that spectrum not often seen in board games (other than wargames). I also love the mutual Queen capture as draw condition. Personally I think Chess-like games should have the possibility of a draw, though it should not be overly frequent. Were it possible to design CV's with this level of precision, I would like odds of 45-45-10 best.
