I picked up this style of defining functions from Jocly; I now believe it is completely equivalent to the other method of function definition.

It was long ago that I wrote this, so I have to look it up now in the code as well. But 'tabs' is an array that holds all HTML table elements, and it is tested whether the first of these has id="board". The second apparently is expected to be a table of piece images, where the column headers are piece IDs, and the columns then contain the image. For the navigation to work, it needs to know the initial setup; this cannot be derived from the current position and the move list, as pieces could be captured before they moved. So the GAME code includes a FEN for it. Together with the move list and the knowledge of implied side effects that determines all positions in the game, in terms of piece IDs. But to display the position it needs to associate IDs with images. Some pieces in earlier positions might no longer be on the board in the current position, so it cannot get those from the board. Therefore it gets them from the table (function GetPieces).

But if the table is missing, there is nothing to get, and it cannot reconstruct earlier positions. Therefore it also doesn't create navigation buttons. If you make it create the buttons desppite the fact that it has no associations between IDs and images, the dislay function doesn't know what pieces to display. This explains why you see an empty board.

Apparently the page is no longer formatted as the code expects it to be.
