That's correct. Pompeii Chess was simply an attempt to make a chess variant fit on the 'step' board design, which I had previously used in Pompeii. I can't say the variant was successful or not but I still like the idea of trying some form of chess on that board.
Troyka also has a game called simply Pompeii with the same square arrayed as playing background.
I've always enjoyed Dan Troyka's creations. And this game is no exception. Though I play with one less Pawn on each side, freeing up the central 3x3 area for more manuevering room during the opening and allowing some of the powerful pieces quick access. This also allows for more room throughout the play. And three Pawns for each player are quite sufficient for this size field. Making them very valuable in order to obtain promotions. And with Shogi drops, each player has ample opportunity for more. Not saying that this actually improves the game, just makes it a little more vicious. ;-)
Thanks for trying it out with me, Gary. There's a zillions version of this available too. Check it out if you have time.
Jeremy Good and I will be giving this game a run through. My feelings are that the previous commentor may be correct... but, maybe Pompeii Chess will turn out to be thought provoking and challenging? After all, Pente can be fun and there's really not much to that game.
the shape of the board combined with drops (possibly also the pawn movement) makes play much too cramped.
