I stopped mysql to change the collation used by phpMyAdmin, but then it wouldn't restart. After having no luck, I rebooted the server, and that didn't help either. So I then deleted the changes I made to my.cnf, and then it was able to restart. The server went for 18 days without a reboot, and that reboot was due to me trying to reconfigure something, not to the server going down.
