I prefer the checkered board, because it is easiest for me to visualize Bishop moves on it, and for whatever reason, perhaps the plainness of the plain board, it is the hardest one for me to visualize moves on. I prefer the marble board to it, because that board gives the playing area some visible terrain that helps me better distinguish the spaces from each other.
