You are on the backup site for Chessvariants.com. Any posts, moves, or other changes you make here will not be permanent, because the pages and database from the main site will be backed up here every midnight EST. Additionally, things may not be working right, because this site is also a testbed for newer system software. So, if you are not here to test, develop, or merely read this site, you may want to change .org to .com in the navigation bar and go to the main site.

Recent versions of Chrome, Firefox, and Edge do not support Java. Internet Explorer and Safari should still support it. Besides that, recent versions of Java will block this script unless you add https://www.chessvariants.com to your Java exceptions list. You should find this in the Security tab of your Java control panel.

UrChess

Kevin Maroney's fix to restore ancient ideas. The stalemated player loses. Bare king loses. No castling, no pawn initial double step, no en passant, pawns start on 3rd and 6th rows, pawns may promote only to pieces already captured; they may do so on 6th or 7th row and may not move to the opposite row until they can promote. Pawns capture one square forward.

Chess Variants

These are simple illustrations rather than strong opponents.
