Alfaerie SVG Piece Graphics. The Alfaerie set of piece graphics in scalable SVG format.[All Comments] [Add Comment or Rating]
📝Greg Strong wrote on Thu, Aug 27, 2020 04:06 AM UTC:

The Alfaerie SVG set is now indexed and available for download. Enjoy!

📝Greg Strong wrote on Sat, May 8, 2021 07:00 PM UTC:

I have updated this set with over 40 new images and improved several of the existing images. Note that some of the compound images (e.g., chancellor) were previously not provided directly, requiring generation with the rendering engine. These are now provided directly for consistency and ease-of-use.

@H.G., Can you unzip this into the location used by the rendering engine, overwritting any existing files?

OK, I think I succeeded doing that.

Thanks!  Now I'll use my script, which utilizes your rendering engine, to generate PNGs in 50x50 and 33x33.  I'll let you know if I run into any issues.

Then, next step will be to update the "Alfaerie: All SVG" piece set to include all the new pieces...

There are 3 new images - the rose and a narrow-knight-dabbabah and wide-knight-dabbabah (for the knave and debtor from Knavish Shatranj.) H.G., can you please add the three images in this zip to your server?

OK, done.

The Knight-above-Rook looks blurred for its Knight part. Maybe that could be fixed?

H. G. Muller wrote on Thu, Dec 22, 2022 04:40 PM UTC:

@Greg: I believe you had a script for rendering the entire set of SVG pieces as PNG. Would it be an idea to run that at size, say, 250x250, to create a zoom-friendly piece set in an alfaeriePNG250 directory?

(Note that I added some pieces: mastodon, sabretooth, bat, scorpion, owl, plane, thief, general, 3 orientations of spearmen, sissa and diplomat.)

Jean-Louis Cazaux wrote on Thu, Dec 22, 2022 08:05 PM UTC:

Nice additions. Except the Owl, not fitting with the rest.

Some ideas for future additions: catapult, bison, panthers or cheetah, bear, antelope, ostrich, wolf, dog, cat, mouse, phantom.

Not to forget to fix the "knight above rook"

Indeed I do.  Although it needs to be updated for new pieces ...  You've added some and I have added a few too that I will need to email you to put on your server.  Let me go through and find out what they are.  It's been a while.  I know I did the Rose but I don't remember what the other couple were.

There's nothing to fix as far as I know...  You mean this guy?

Jean-Louis Cazaux wrote on Fri, Dec 23, 2022 08:04 PM UTC in reply to Greg Strong from Thu Dec 22 10:26 PM:

Yes Greg I mean this guy. I see it blurred in its upper part.

📝Greg Strong wrote on Fri, Dec 23, 2022 08:33 PM UTC in reply to Jean-Louis Cazaux from 08:04 PM:

You have something going on. It is exactly the same technology with the same vectors as every other knight piece. The knight's head is slightly smaller - it has to be to fit - but the edges are of identical sharpness.  Does anyone else see anything wrong with the middle piece?

H. G. Muller wrote on Fri, Dec 23, 2022 08:48 PM UTC in reply to Greg Strong from 08:33 PM:

To me it looks OK. Some of the horizontal Rook lines are antialiased in a bit of an unfortunate way (so that a gray edge results), but if you squint so that you cannot resolve individual pixels this disappears (as it should).

That's crazy. I use a Mac Book. I am looking with Safari and I see this:

Jean-Louis Cazaux wrote on Sat, Dec 24, 2022 05:22 PM UTC in reply to Jean-Louis Cazaux from 05:19 PM:

And with Firefox (not my default browser), I see this, which looks fine! :

📝Greg Strong wrote on Sat, Dec 24, 2022 06:05 PM UTC in reply to Jean-Louis Cazaux from 05:19 PM:

The images you posted didn't come through, but I looked on Safari on an iPhone and I see it but I cannot explain it. As far as I know, that image is no different than any of the others. Very strange

Jean-Louis Cazaux wrote on Sat, Dec 24, 2022 06:26 PM UTC in reply to Greg Strong from 06:05 PM:

What a pain. How you do to upload images inside the comments?

🕸Fergus Duniho wrote on Sat, Dec 24, 2022 06:36 PM UTC in reply to Jean-Louis Cazaux from 05:22 PM:

Judging by your source code, you are not entering images correctly. Just because WYSIWYG mode seems easier doesn't mean it is. It is not exactly like a Word Processor, and you cannot paste images to it. You need to enter an URL for an image on the web, and using the HTML or Markdown formats will let you more easily see whether you have done this.

Jean-Louis Cazaux wrote on Sat, Dec 24, 2022 07:03 PM UTC in reply to Fergus Duniho from 06:36 PM:

Yes, it's what I say, it's a pain when you are a common people not a computer expert. I took WYSIWYG because it was a way to include pictures, with the default mode it is not possible. I really wonder how people embed images in their comments.

OK, I try again.

With Safari

With Firefox

I updated your HTML to use IMG tags, but your images are still not showing up. Check that your URLs are correct.

They show up for me

H. G. Muller wrote on Sat, Dec 24, 2022 08:26 PM UTC in reply to Greg Strong from 08:09 PM:

The images in Jean-Louis last comment do not show up for me on an Android tablet using the Samsung browser. But when I paste their URL directly in the address bar I can see them. It could have to do with the fact that they are on a http site, while CVP is https. Depending on browser security settings links to http on a https page might not be valid.

Anyway, what is seen on Safari is very strange indeed. The Knight part is totally blurred.

📝Greg Strong wrote on Sun, Dec 25, 2022 12:40 AM UTC:

This is a test:

Ok, I think I fixed it.  Please let me know if this looks OK.

Jean-Louis Cazaux wrote on Sun, Dec 25, 2022 05:16 PM UTC in reply to Jean-Louis Cazaux from Sat Dec 24 07:03 PM:

@Greg: yes it looks ok, even with Safari, for the image you put into the comment section. The one in the main page is still the same, with the knight part blurred.
