'That's Chess256'

I don' see the resemblance. Chess 256 is only about where the orthodox
pawns start. This game is about replacing orthodox pawns with unorthodox
ones. The only similarity is the 8 random generations.

I can't say that I think that this Random Pawns variant is a very good
idea. Eight strange and often unsymmetrical pawns are going to make a
game with very poor clarity, and some of the pawns seem intrinsically
awkward or of little value.

That's Chess256, if pawns are randomly placed only on second and third row.

One thing you can do is instead of rolling the dice 16 times, just roll 8 times and opponent's pawns copy yours, so if your king's rook's pawn is XCO then your opponent's king's rook's pawn will be same, the O part is unusable for both of them.
