I like Charles' thinking on this game also.  Whatever the inventor's
intent, I like the idea of the third thru sixth ranks all being water so
that you can't get to the enemy back ranks without using rafts.

Can pieces moves entirely on land without involving a Raft? Is checkmate by moving a Raft allowed? It seems odd that files a-b are entirely land rather than, say, a and h. Are you sure that a-b 3-6 really is land, and not a particular example of a placing of Rafts?
