I completely agree with you that the font was too small and there wasn't
enough contrast in original version.  This must be what you were reviewing
because the page says, 'August 19, 1996. Last modified: February 27,
1997.'  I tried playing it in a dark beer bar in San Francisco and that
involved a lot of squinting!

Steve Jackson Games fixed these problems in the second edition of the
cards.  According to the website, that was released in September 1997.  I
have both editions, so I can compare.  The second edition has the card
name in a wider and brighter font and the descriptive text is no
black-on-white -- much easier to read.

Also, note that there is a now second deck, Knightmare Chess 2, which was
released in May 1998.  It evolves the game with 80 new cards.  You can
play the second deck alone or combine it with the first deck.
