Jeremy's 'one strike and you're not out' rises to level of ''new CV.'' But there are little mirrors here and there. This one has Jeremy's ''new idea'' built into it as active case-specific Mutator. You move to take opponent's Queen at the next opportunity. She leaves the threat ignored by minor piece of her Queen, because the moves 8, 9, and 10 are coming up, and you have to exit Pub pieces first, before you can act to take the Queen. The first threat is no threat, not at all, and may be delayed 2 or 3 not only 1 move. Etc.

This game sets up a periodical effect by Betza. The Pub, the widened 8 central squares, is closed specific three of every 10 moves, and any pieces there must exit one by one insofar as possible. Here Ralph Betza suggests having Chess Variant tournaments which did not exist then. Playing all Betza games would be the best possible themed tournament, most never even played in CVP's Game Courier. Betza recognizes the Pub as what we now call a Mutator, the term originating with J.P. Neto, meaning its use could easily be widely applicable even to inferior piece mixes, the now popular slapdash potpourri.

No. No. e4-e5 is legal. Betza refers to a King checked in Pub moving to
another of the eight Pub squares, when Pub closed, rather than having to
move out of it; presumably others can (occasionally)move within the 8
squares too. Mostly they would be busy having to move out. Betza intends
that e4-e5 become 'illegal' when another move is required, namely a
pawn's or piece's moving out of the eight squares on Move 8-9-10, or the
usual getting King out of check from any square. Betza could explain
this better, but he always got carried by his ideas.
Is it required? I don't think Betza intends e4-e5 followed by e5-e6 to be
required even though this version has Pub closed for three moves in a row.
Both questions point to lack of clarity in the description.
Betza says here 'A Chess Variant Tournament played with randomly
chosen games which are less often played would take away the advantage of
specialists.' Interesting: there's more than one way to skin a cat,
i.e. pick games for tournaments, than stuffing the ballot box.

If White has a Pawn on e4 while the Pub is closed and e5 is empty, is the move Pe4-e5 illegal? If not, is it required?
