Displaced chutes/ladders are a reasonable idea, but it seemed to me that
the tactical complexity of the game was already enough, maybe too much. 

Also, since c&l came in sequence right after Twinkie, you can see where my
inspiration was at...

How about a variation, where ladders, chutes OR ladders and chutes can have a destination one square away from where it should be? Can be expanded even further to allow only orthagonal OR diagonal sidesteped destinations.
