I don't know about rook, but knight probably can move in any direction wich puts him on higher rank. By the way, what is the second variant?

I note that you give the Bishop as an example - the most unambiguous one. Can Rooks initially move sideways, and Knights along the two 'more sideways than forward' directions, or is the narrower Shogi interpretation of 'forward only' used?
