The File Manager page for the Interactive Diagrams article ( https://www.chessvariants.com/index/managefiles.php?itemid=MSinteractive-diagrams ) does not display properly: after printing the header "File Manager for Members" there is nothing else. (So I suppose the PHP script generating it crashes at that point; the page source shows nothing after the </h1>.) File Manager pages on other articles seem to work fine.

This is a bit inconvenient, as I wanted to update the script for the Interactive Diagram.

[Edit] This now works normally, and I have been able to make the upload.

An interesting variant. Ski-pieces are not used all that often in variants, and should definitely give it a unique flavor. I also like the fact that castling makes the King end up well in a corner despite the fact that the Rooks are not on the edge. I could not find the inverted pieces in the Alfaerie PNG set, so I improvised a bit for those in the Diagram. (Alternatives would have been the symbols for the hoppers, or the halflings (but there is no halfling Queen.)

Cam (short for Cameron!?) Neely was a (male) Boston Bruins ice hockey player, too (though Gilman didn't know it, yes Cam can be a woman's name, also even short for the UK Queen Consort's name Camilla). The word chess also means a form of grass. Words can sometimes have way more than one meaning.

Just to make sure about the moves of the Ski-XXX. Can they hop over the 1st square if it is occupied or not? For example, is the Ski-Bishop moving as Alfil-then-Bishop, A(A-B) or like Tamerlane Chess Talia which needs a first square empty, nA(A-B) ?

When I saw the error messages produced from your use of the File Manager, there was an exclamation mark after the file name. When I looked at the directory with WinSCP, I did not see the exclamation mark, but I did see that its filesize was o bytes. When I tried running the File Manager on your page for Orthodia, it hung without completing the page. Trying a test page, I found that I could upload and modify an image file. I then deleted the image in your directory for Orthodia. The File Manager no longer hung, and I was able to use the File Manager to upload and delete an image for your page. So, try again, and let me know if you have any further problems.

Diceroller is Fire wrote on Tue, Oct 4, 2022 11:04 AM UTC:Good ★★★★

File Manager do not work. I have unpublished Orthodia and all pieces’ images are here. But my image of board below the diagram of this board is missing. So before this it wasn’t missing by more than one time. I open File Manager for this page and see “File manager submitted item” — and nothing more! Please fix. Other inserted files of this page are safe and sound. Thank you very much!

There is a 'Restart' button in the AI panel (which would start a new game, but shuffle the pieces in case of a shuffle variant), as well as a |< navigation button for getting back to the initial position of the current game (undoing all manipuations that were made so far). But you would have to open the AI panel to see those buttons. I never payed much attention to this, because the browser refresh seems an alternative that works just as well.

Slowless in loading is in a sense a self-inflicted problem: I let the Diagram script intentionally delay 1 second before executing the code that creates it. This was to solve the problem that comment pages contain multiple Diagrams, each of the comments referring to the script (because at the time they were posted the user assumed he would have the only comment with a Diagram on that page). If the first Diagram then immediately starts executing the script, the other Diagrams might not have been loaded yet. Ideally the script should only execute after the page has completely loaded. I tried to do that using onload="Init()", but that never was executed. Probably I was doing something wrong, but I have no idea what.

In principle generating the Diagram with the script should be very fast, probably faster than loading a dedicated image. Because the JavaScript and piece images should all come from the browser cache, if you have viewed other pages with Interactive Diagrams and the same pieces from the same set before. A dedicated image would be specific for the page you are loading, and you would most likely not have seen it before.

The checkmating script is now also available in a version that can handle Pao-like hoppers and some bent riders (namely those that change direction after the first step). I have not updated the page on CVP yet to do this, becase the current interface on that page has no mechanism to specify such pieces. On my website there is a version where you can select pieces through buttons; there I also have buttons for the Cannon, Vao, W-then-B (Manticore), D-then-B (Osprey) and vW-then-B (Snake Tongue).

http://hgm.nubati.net/applets/mate31.html?files=8&ranks=8

The Vao can be very useful in combination with the W-then-B pieces, or even the Marquis (NW). Because these pieces can be used as a mount for activating the Vao in a way that cooperates extremely well with their own move.

what do you see as a disadvantage for using Interactive Diagrams as the main diagram? -- H.G. Muller

I see two minor downsides to the interactive diagram as the main/first/only setup display: it takes a little longer to load, and after making use of the interactivity it is no longer a setup diagram (requires a refresh, or is there a button for reset now?).

The interactive diagram has the benefit of also supplementing the Piece descriptions (position-specific and interaction-specific piece rules are needed in addition, and for accessibility a text move description should always appear) and giving some Playability.

What I think would be nice is to have buttons over the graphic which switch all page graphics between the options. -- Greg Strong

A graphics selection button would be nice, although of course it wouldn't apply to pages requiring (or otherwise using) custom images. Perhaps even better, we could take to setting some more user-specific configurations, and let a logged-in user automatically use their favored piece set when possible?

Fergus requested I use [abstract diagrams] Kevin Pacey

If I found the comments you're referring to, I wouldn't characterize it as a request, and I'm sorry if it came across as an editorial request. You should feel free to use whatever graphics you want. (I guess I should caveat that: we do strongly encourage using the site's tools when possible for consistency, and using piece graphics that are traditionally used for corresponding pieces.)

On a mobile device, the board is supposed to be resized to entirely fit on the screen. I suppose this could make things too small for the large games that you sometimes play. Is that what is happening? Or is the board even smaller than it needs to be to fit on the screen?

The main problem is that when rendering boards using PNG Image. JPG Image, or GIF Image, the board is smaller than the hitboxes for selecting squares, causing the highlights on the board to become misaligned with the board image.

As for the board size, I think the best option is to have something for disabling fitting the board to the screen in the GC Edit Preset Form (which is off by default).

I would find useful to have "What's New" appearing directly on the "Explore" menu of the top bar.

If I'm not wrong, it only appear under "Topic Index" in the "Explore" menu, which is a bit burried.

This is just a suggestion

In my opinion, we should add a diagram with conventional graphics (could be Alfaerie SVG, HG's Interactive diagram, Musketeer C. board design tool, ...) every time there is a diagram with the abstract set. It can be afforded to have both, so everyone will be happy. And it will be clear for everyone :=)

Whenever I try to use a GC preset on a mobile device with a small screen (at least for Android) the board is excessively small, and in the case of images is misaligned. The presets work fine, but the fact that the boards are so small makes them nigh unplayable. The effect gets worse as the board gets larger.
