Can a Pawn convert by jumping over the square passed by a Pawn when the converted Pawn double-steps?

With regard to Charles' comment, actually, I was thinking of Shogi, but I wanted to get away from taking the pieces off-board.

I have suggested the 64-square version for the Invent and Play contest. In some ways I prefer the larger board because it does provide more room for maneuver. However, the original reason for the takeover capture was to increase the density of power to make the game more interesting on a small board. In the large board, the takeover feature becomes a bit too strong. The ZRF has two subvariants for both 42 and 64 squares, one limits the takeover capture to a jump adjacent to the capture piece, and the other limits takeover captures to undefended pieces only. I tend to favor the limited jump for the 64-square board

Antoine's suggestion to limit captures to either a takeover or replacement by some kind of secondary rule is interesting. Perhaps on odd turns it would be by takeover and on even turns it would be by replacement! This could actually be implemented as a subvariant, if I get ambitious!

Peter's suggestion to use a ring board is also interesting.

I haven't tested the game, and am a bit afraid that the two-way capture
makes the pieces too powerful. But the game looks promising, to say the
least. So I give it a rating of Excellent as it is, or, if need be, with
some twisted rule which decides at any time whether the piece captures by
replacement or by jumping, or with your suggested rule that capture by
jumping is possible on an adjacent piece.
(I believe you're right to pit the 64-square version for PBEM.)

The ZRF for this game allows for play with the standard FIDE board and setup, and the game works perfectly well that way. What might be interesting is to play this game on a Ring Board, with the usual restriction of only capturing moves ending on the ring.

This is a very, very nice game, I don´t know how would be the game play and dynamics in a bigger board, but it may be even better in someones, worst in others, depending on board size. It is a good project to think about a bigger board version of Take Over Chess, it has merits enough to try.

The arrangement of Bishops is very clever, preserving their FIDE positions relative to the King, Queen, and remaining Rook and their different square colours. The ability to recruit enemy pieces is interesting, like Shogi but with the immediacy of Othello/Reversi, and would be very good (with modification to the Knight capture) on a full-sized board.
