It's nice to see a game of different armies on a large canvas. It's hard to tell if it is balanced or not, but I wonder if balance is as important at this scale: both sides possibly having more material than they can effectively use. Or is 11x11 with 22 pieces a side too small for that sort of effect?

In George Hodges' 'Ten Shogi Variants', Wayne Schmittberger states, in the
Tai Shogi section, 'A single Pawn, or other weak piece, advanced too far to
be protected can, under certain circumstances, be fatal in a game of Tai!'

If this is true, then it's unlikely that Spinal Tap vs. Terror Chess has
reached the stage where there is so much material imbalance doesn't matter.

Well, given that in Tai Shogi pieces promote when they capture (I think), he might have been discussing something other than material.

Wow, I have really been missing out by not checking out this board. I got a kick out of seeing David's comments for Terror Chess and laughed when I read about pitting the two armies against each other. Then I find that you have actually DONE it! You guys have totally made my day. My email is [email protected], and I hope to play this against you soon. Not too soon though, I have not learned Spinal Tap yet....
