It is also worth mentioning on this page the use of an essentially similar
piece in the variants played in
(1) Korea, where it can move all three directions at once;
(2) Japan, where it moves only in the forward direction until it reaches
the enemy camp and is then optionally gains 5 other one-step moves
including the sideways ones.

Sorry, by 'at once', I meant 'immediately' or 'from the start' rather than 'at the same time', which I now see that it could be misinterpreted as. I should have given a rating as well.

After the pawn had crossed the river can it kill sideways?

there is only a few lines of info on this pawn, and your question is answered under the heading 'movement' and also in the diagram :)

yes, the pawn can capture sideways... once it has crossed the river...

After the pawn is moved across the river can I continue to take an extra move whether I'm capturing or not? Also, can the pawn after it crosses the river move backwards?

Not sure what you mean by extra move.

When the pawn crosses the river, it gains the ability to move and capture sideways.

It still can't go backwards.
