Sorry, this is probably way too low level for this site, but I cannot find
a specific answer to my question in any of the other arenas. I am
teaching
my 8 year old son to play chess. I haven't played since college (many
moons ago) and he has told me that his friend said a knight can only pass
over its own players. This doesn't sound right to me - could someone
please confirm??? I appreciate your time.

No, a Knight can jump over pieces of either color.
