This (Distant Chess, which has since been deleted) has already been invented and is called Rifle Chess.

Michael is right, this is Rifle Chess, and another example of what we face with thousands of games and counting. Nice game, Stephane; you were anticipated by W. B. Seabrook: http://www.chessvariants.org/index/displayperson.php?personid=WBSeabrook
[go to 'Invented by' - that URL is too long to put here]
How should this site handle these situations? Should we acknowledge the re-invention by listing them at the end of the original? Under Notes, we could place a statement:
'This game was re-invented in 2007 by S. Burkhart, under the name Capture Chess.' We could even leave the new game page in, without rules, as a pointer to the original.
Or, we could remove all reference to the re-invention.
Or we could ignore the whole thing.
Any comments?

Unless Rifle Chess is also commonly known as Distant Chess (and I don't think it is), my thought is to remove the Distant Chess page. We can, if necessary, add an index entry for Rifle Chess as Distant Chess, if people like the name better, or the name is commonly used. In any case, I don't think we need a separate page for this.

I'm very much confused. Of course you must delete this entry. (Could you
check as well the other Games I proposed, and the last one called
Companion Chess ?)
I don't need to tell you I wasn't aware of Riffle Chess.
As a matter of fact, I personnally suggested recently to regroup similar
Games, by referencing in the 'See Also' section !
I would suggest two ways to handle this situation:
1/ refine even more the subject entries for new games and list related
games so that people see at once if they bring new ideas.
2/ quote an anteriority indicator when Games differ by small changes (I
noticed for instance a lot of similar Games to Fusion Chess, or for
variants with simultaneous moves...)

Stephane, I'm sure no one was accusing you of stealing Rifle Chess and claiming it as your own. These things happen. I think TCVP are organized pretty well, but it's hard to search for a specific game mechanic. In this case, you would have had to read through 'different capturing methods' to find Rifle Chess, which you could have done, but it can be a hit-or-miss process. As long as the site continues to allow member submissions, I guess we just have hope that the experienced CVers will notice duplications and point them out.
