Contributor status[Subject Thread] [Add Response]

One of the things that frustrates newcomers is that registering does not
grant them contributor status, and when they try to post their own game,
they are unable to. I want to change this. I'm thinking of giving
contributor status to newcomers by default, but I also want to retain the
ability to revoke contributor status from those who abuse it. This will
streamline things for newcomers, who want to start posting game rules.
Since editors still need to approve submissions, this will mainly just
change the channel through which we get first-time submissions.

The first place to start would be in user registration, marking any new
user as a contributor. The second step would be updating the database to
mark every registered member as a contributor, then marking a few select
accounts as not contributors. Adding code to ban people as contributors
might make things more convenient, but it is not a priority, since editors
can do this by editing the database.

The main downside of doing this will be an inflated list of contributors
that includes many people who are not actually contributing anything.

One alternative is to mark people as contributors when they actually post
pages here. This would allow anyone for whom IsContributor is 0 or 1 to
post pages. So, to ban people or accounts from contributing, a separate
value would have to be used with that meaning. Instead of the steps above,
this would involve changing how the scripts for posting games work.
