By the old promotion rules, promotion happened only on the last rank, and a Pawn on its ninth rank could not check the enemy King unless it could advance and promote. By the new rules, a Pawn may promote on any of the last three ranks, and it may check the enemy King on the last rank even when it is otherwise unable to advance and promote. Except for having a different selection of pieces it may promote to, this is the same as in Grand Chess.
