I retract my initial comment regarding the lack of usefullness of the river in this game.

I've played a few games on Zillions and now see the tactical need of preventing pawns to capture sideways before crossing the river.

I'm still not fully convinced though of the Pawns' diagonal capturing ability after crossing the river.
