Freeling invented a lot of notable variants in the 70s and 80s. His most notable invention is probably his 1984 Grand Chess, but he has a lot of other interesting inventions. Looneybird (Different capture than move; Shogi-style drops) and Rotary (You can rotate your non-pawn pieces), to name just two others, look interesting.
