The Chess Variant Pages

This page is written by the game's inventor, James Zuercher.

GoshawkChess

GoshawkChess is a variant of Capablanca Chess (10x8 board) where the Archbishop and Chancellor are replaced by two Goshawks per side.  The minor pieces are in random positions between the Rooks and Kings in a mirror-symetric setup.  This results in 6 possible initial positions.  I started on Goshawk chess in 2017.

Setup

The board is 10 files and 8 ranks as in Capablanca Chess. The Kings and Rooks start as they do in Capablanca Chess - the Kings on f1 and f8 and the Rooks in the corners. The minor pieces are placed in random positions between the Rooks and Kings in a mirror-symmetric setup. This results in six possible initial positions.

For the Goshawk I use a hawk or bird symbol.  Graphics per ChessV, Snipping Tool, and Photoshop.

Pieces

The  Rook, Knight, Bishop, Pawn, King, and Queen from orthodox Chess are used along with two Goshawks per side.  The Goshawk moves as a Camel (3,1) or Wazir (1,0).

Rules

The rules are as in Capablanca Chess, except that Pawns can promote to Queen, Rook, Bishop, Knight, or Goshawk, but not to Archbishop or Chancellor (which are not used in this game.)

Notes

I have generated six .cvc files for playing using Greg Strong's ChessV. I can send them if you are interested.
