Lex Kraaijeveld has sent us this link. It briefly describes some of his early work on using evolutionary (phylogenetic) techniques to shed light from a different angle on the question of how chess originated and evolved. At the moment. He is working on a much larger analysis, using more sophisticated techniques. The articles referred to on the page are available to everyone interested, either as pdf-files sent by e-mail (though one of them is quite large at 6MB) or as photocopies sent by snailmail.
