A Chess Cartoon

We recently received a letter (yes, an actual postal letter) from a young reader. She sent us a drawing which she obviously spent a great deal of work on. We're happy to publish it here. Thanks Miriam!

Dear Chess Variant Pages,

My name is Miriam. I'm 10 1/2 years old going into 5th grade. I learned a lot about chess when I was small and now I take chess classes every Tuesday. Since my dad really likes chess and he can play really well, he was the one who taught my sisters and me. I remember always counting up the games I had won playing various people.

One day after playing a game of chess with my dad, I got bored. There was really nothing to do. So I decided to do one of the things I love most: draw. Since my mind was still on chess, I decided to draw a cartoon of a chess game being played by the pieces themselves. I really wanted to make this a good drawing that I could always keep, so I took out the pieces to draw them. I worked on it for a long time; and now I would like to share my work with you. I hope you will like it. Feel free to share it with others in your magazine/publish it. Enclosed is a color copy of the drawing.

Sincerely,

Miriam Riad
