Influence Chess

Introduction

In this game, a war is fought between two armies (white and black), but these are controlled by pieces above or below them. Thus, there are three boards: Above, Middle, and Below. Submission for the 84 squares contest.

Setup

There are 3 separate boards of 28 squares apiece. Each is an identical 7x4 rectangle.

  Board 1: Above Board 2: Middle Board 3: Below

Play

At the beginning of the game, players decide amongst themselves who is Above and who is Below. Then, using a coin, die, or other random method, the players randomly determine which army they will help in the war. Above takes the first move.

Pieces

Rook, Knight, Queen, and King: Same as FIDE chess.

Pawn: Same as FIDE, except no double move or e.p. capture.

Above Prince, Below Prince: One square in any direction, except as detailed below.

Above Commander, Below Commander: Two squares in any direction (no jumping), except as detailed below.

Rules

  1. The objective of the game is to direct the army you are helping to capture the other army's King.
  2. Players have 3 options for each move:
    1. Move a piece on your own board, according to the moves above.
    2. Move a piece on Board 2. In order to do this:
      1. the move must be legal (see rule 4);
      2. you must have a piece on the corresponding square on your own board;
      3. your opponent must not have a stronger piece on the corresponding square of his board.
    3. Move a piece on Board 2 according to Rule 2b, and make an identical move on your own board. The move on your own board must be legal; i.e. if it is a Rook or Queen move, the path must be unimpeded.
  3. You may move Board 2 pieces of either color, not just your "side".
  4. It is legal to move into Check if and only if the opposing side cannot capture the King on the next move.
  5. Pawn promotion is the same as in regular chess. It is legal to promote to a Bishop.
  6. Castling is not permitted.

Examples

In this example, Above can move the Knight, because the corresponding square is blank.

*---*---*---*---*   *---*---*---*---*   *---*---*---*---*

Here, Above can still move the knight, because the corresponding Board 3 space has a same-strength piece.

*---*---*---*---*   *---*---*---*---*   *---*---*---*---*

Above cannot move the Knight, because there is a stronger Below piece on the corresponding square.

In this case, Above can move the rook to the marked square, and the Above Prince can make the same move.

Above (influencing White) cannot move the Black Queen to the marked square, because Below can then affect it to capture the White King.

Above (influencing White) can move the Black Queen to the marked square if and only if he also moves the Above Commander to the same square. This way, the stronger influence of the Above Commander prevents Below from moving the Queen.
