No, Magic Chess is not.

That looks fascinating, though I didn't see it anywhere on CVP before now (not sure if it should get any tags just yet).

If you're interested in a card preset that works, I have my own Magic Chess.

Aha! I was looking for that!

The game really needs a Rules page. ;)

Here's the preset page from one card usage game (nowadays the link to the preset says the settings file cannot be found). [Editor nowadays] Greg Strong and I 'traded' comments years apart, years ago, in the comments section - it seemed the preset didn't work back then, when the settings file was around:

You are clearly quite inventive (and fast) - you're welcome to submit it if you wish, under whatever other name you might call it, assuming card usage is indeed working for Game Courier currently.

Florin Lupusoru wrote on Sat, Feb 17 03:07 PM UTC in reply to Kevin Pacey from 03:00 PM:

Ok. Here is how I would do it.

Hmmm...

I skimmed briefly through old comments of yours around early 2018 and didn't see any mention of card usage not being supported on Game Courier. Unless it was another editor, I might have concluded card usage was not supported on my own, since I recall I didn't see any card usage CV presets that clearly worked (there's just 2, one a not too proper-looking CV preset [of the cards type?!] that may work) listed on the Main CVP Alphabetical Index back in the early days for me on CVP site - it seemed there were card usage CVs' rules pages in healthy numbers to me, though.

Any proper-looking dice chess CV with a preset (edit: i.e. just Vegas Fun Chess, of the 2 CVs with presets) had logs that had just shown error message pages when I attempted to view them back then, I recall.

I had read that documentation long ago, Fergus, but then someone (I thought yourself) told me cards were not supported on GC.

I don't think I would have, since I know better.

How about dice usage on Game Courier, these days?

Even before GAME Code was Turing complete, I had programmed Vegas Fun Chess with dice. However, some of the code I wrote for that is broken and might be obsolete. Still, Game Courier has long had random number generation, and you can use dice graphics to represent dice rolls if you want to.

Weird. Was my schizophrenia acting up, back then?

I lost heart in making any more card-based CVs when I learned that Game Courier did not support card usage (as I wrote earlier).

But Game Courier does support card-based CVs. See

I lost heart in making any more card-based CVs when I learned that Game Courier did not support card usage (as I wrote earlier). Things could become different if Game Courier later does support usage of a standard card deck (dice CVs are nice to have, too).

At the moment I have a backlog of things I will (or could) do, too, and health (and other real life) concerns make it more essential to make priorities as well.

If anyone else feels like making a card-based CV that includes Jokers or 52-54 cells on any other-shaped board, before I might get to it myself, I won't mind.

Florin Lupusoru wrote on Sat, Feb 17 12:52 PM UTC in reply to Kevin Pacey from 12:44 PM:

The Jocker chess variant does not exist yet. Since this was your idea why don't you give it a try?

💡📝Kevin Pacey wrote on Sat, Feb 17 12:44 PM UTC in reply to Florin Lupusoru from 06:35 AM:

I had the long board in mind for this CV only because of there being 4 card suits in a standard (French) card deck, and the board's 13 ranks equally naturally matched such a card deck's ranks. Didn't think of a way to make a different shaped board that could equally conveniently use 52 cards, plus a Joker or two if that'd help, but if another way works I'd prefer it to become its own variant, and still have this one existing - the more the merrier, if they all turn out to work in practice. Who knows, maybe a Roulette Wheel-themed CV is also possible, as a separate idea?! The 4 files x 13 ranks also reminded me of Circular Chess' 4x16 board a bit, which helped me tentatively estimate the piece values (rightly or wrongly).

Around the time when I made this CV, I was told Game Courier did not support the use of cards (or dice, perhaps?), but Bob G's latest initiative to use some sort of card deck has got me wondering if it won't be long before support for the use of a standard card deck arrives for Game Courier usage.

Interesting concept. It might be more difficult to attack the enemy King from the flank because Bishops will have to travel in zig zag and Knights will be too powerful. But I like the idea.

Here is my humble suggestion on how to improve this game.

Use a 7x7 board.

7x7 = 49.

Add 4 extra squares on the corners.

49+4 = 53.

Add a Jocker to the stack of cards and you are done.

You can also give additional powers to the Jocker and the King cards.

So, what do you think?

@ Fergus:

Somehow the pieces have become too big for the diagram on this page.
