It works! Subject names were kept to 16 characters, because the subject name was used as the ItemID, which was kept to 16 characters. So I changed what gets used for the ItemID. Instead of the string given as a subject name, which now gets stored in a new field, the ItemID is now the concatenation of an adler32 hash and a crc32b hash of the subject name, which exactly fits the 16 character space given for an ItemID, and is likely to be unique for each subject. Of course, this is all backwards compatible with earlier comments. Earlier comments will keep and use their old 16-character max subjects, but new comments can have indefinitely long subject lines.
