Canvasser. Compound of Rook and Camel.[All Comments] [Add Comment or Rating]

The name "Canvasser" seems to have stuck by now.

However, if it was me, I'd go with Hakim (the Arabic word for "governor"), or perhaps Medir ("administrator").

Can Canvasser be Agitator?! In my notation, he is it. Noted as Ç

This piece is pretty rare it seems

Yes it's an interesting piece the 'rook camel'. As i just mentioned on the page for 'Lùotuoqí' (Camel Chess), here .. http://www.chessvariants.org/contests/luotuoqi.html

.. it doesn't appear that is actually a rook camel, but with David's comment 'Back in February 2000, S. Sirotkin sent a 7x7 chess variant, called 'Herd', where Pawns promote to Rook-Knight, Rook-Camel, or Rook-Bison.' which is here https://www.chessvariants.com/small.dir/herd.html that is right, we have a rook camel, one that is promoted from a pawn.

Charles has given a name for it though, good work.

Ultimately I used Goum for the Camel+Epoletna compound in Man and Beast 05: Punning by Numbers. I would still like to know the name of the person who originally suggested it to add to my full set of acknowledgments for the series in its overview page.

While extrapolation issues make the name Goum unsuited to a radial-oblique hybrid, it has struck me as highly suited to replacing the unsatisfactory Hajji for the Camel+Antelope compound. For this reason I would like to know the name of this name's contributor so that I can credit you in MAB 03: From Ungulates Outward.

I would suggest Goum as a name for this piece. In traditional bedouin culture a family unit is called a bayt (tent). Several bayts travelling together (with camels) are refered to as a goum.

<BLOCKQUOTE> Of your suggestions, Notre Dame has the problem of being a cathedral and so suggesting the Bishop move. Oddly it was not that name that rang bells for me but Winnebago, which has similar connotations to the Caravan that I suggested for a piece in my article When Beasts Collide </BLOCKQUOTE> <P>Like Camel, Caravan is a progressive rock group. But that aside, did you miss my point about all my suggestions being stupid? They were all intentionally lousy suggestions. And did you miss the point I was making about the name Canvasser? I think it is as lousy as any of the suggestions I made. I was hoping that my awful suggestions would get through to you better than simply telling you straightforwardly that you aren't very good at naming pieces.</P>

http://www.chessvariants.org/contests/luotuoqi.html <p>is the page for 'Lùotuoqí' (Camel Chess), a chess variant designed by committee. This variant contains a piece called the Rook-Camel. Back in February 2000, S. Sirotkin sent a 7x7 chess variant, called 'Herd', where Pawns promote to Rook-Knight, Rook-Camel, or Rook-Bison.

Canvasser - The name is the only one currently used for this piece in a variant. I accept your criticism and welcome better suggestions. Of your suggestions, Notre Dame has the problem of being a cathedral and so suggesting the Bishop move. Oddly it was not that name that rang bells for me but Winnebago, which has similar connotations to the Caravan that I suggested for a piece in my article When Beasts Collide - one which is unlikely to be widely used and will probably never have its own Piececlopedia entry. Caravan doubly fits as it can mean a procession of camels as well as vehicles of various ages, and even shares many of Canvasser's letters! If I can find an alternative naming system for the weaker piece and its kin, with which I am not entirely satisfied, I would consider transferring Caravan to the piece on this page. The only question then would be of which ffen image would most suit it. A name that really captures my imagination will replace Canvasser throughout my variants with full credit to the person suggesting or inspiring it. <p>I am still relatively new to this and making the odd error - but promptly fixing them when notified. Where I gave too little prominence to usages earlier than my own, I now realise the potential of this to give offence and have corrected this faux pas as well. I do not know how to do multiple references in the style of the existing e.g. Chancellor/Marshal pointing to the same page. Advice on how to do them would be a positive and useful contribution.

Canvasser is an obscure name. Instead of suggesting a better name, I will
suggest some other obscure names. How about Newport? The city of Newport,
R.I. is known for its beautiful mansions, which are buildings, and like
Camel, it is a cigarette brand. How about Stationary Traveler? Buildings
are normally stationary, while camels normally travel. Also, this is the
title of an album by the progressive rock group Camel. How about Notre
Dame? Camels have backs similar to the Hunchback of Notre Dame's, and
Notre Dame was a building. How about Winnebago? Like a Camel, it is used
for transportation, and like a building, you can live inside it.

In general, names should be less obscure than Canvasser or any of my
obscure suggestions, and any name used for a piece should work within the
context of the game it is used in. The name of Canvasser doesn't seem to
work well in a context that includes the usual Chess pieces with their
usual names.

This page also has additional dead links. Cardinal and From Undulates Outwards are dead. This piece also does not belong in the Piececlopedia, in my opinion, and certanly not with this name. This is another Charles Gilman page designed specifically to promote his games and his naming of pieces. This is not what the Piececlopedia is for.
