You are on the backup site for Chessvariants.com. Any posts, moves, or other changes you make here will not be permanent, because the pages and database from the main site will be backed up here every midnight EST. Additionally, things may not be working right, because this site is also a testbed for newer system software. So, if you are not here to test, develop, or merely read this site, you may want to change .org to .com in the navigation bar and go to the main site.

Promote King Chess. King can promote into Cthulhu, and white pawns can promote into black pawns. (8x8, Cells: 64) [All Comments] [Add Comment or Rating]

I still don't get it. Promoting your own pawn to an enemy piece just because it could be captured if it was one of your own pieces doesn't alter the fact that you are giving your opponent free pieces. Sure, if he has a rook on a8 and I move my pawn to h8, promoting it queen, I immediately lose the new queen on my next move. I get that. But that's still surely preferable to GIVING him a piece of his own on a platter. I can't see any circumstances in which I'd do that, unless I was tired of the game and went on a suicide mission - in which case I'd just resign without all that rigmarole.
