Official Football Chess
In 1967, an US game company called Diversified Creations marketed a chess variant
called Official Football Chess. The pieces in this variant were replaced by
figures that represent players in an American football game: kings are quarterbacks,
queens are fullbacks, rooks are halfbacks, knights
are centers, bishop are ends, and pawns are linemen.
The rules also tell that different terminology has
to be used: instead of giving check, one must say
that the quarterback is under attack, etc.
The rules are quite similar to chess, but a different opening setup is used with less pieces.
The setup is shown below. All pieces move like in regular chess; one wins by "downing the quarterback" of the opponent, i.e., checkmate.
