Vyrémorn Chess Pictures

This is the third set in a series of pictures of chess variant sets. The theme of the series is that all the sets are finalists in the 1999 Large Variant Contest.

The pictures below are of Nathan McDonald's Vyrémorn Chess. The oblique board with a central court provides an elegant playing surface, however setting up the board was something of a difficulty, given the strange shape, and oblique orientation. The board was created using Fergus Duniho's Chess Variant Construction Set ideas, with the additional idea of creating larger "sub-boards" of 4x4 and 2x2 squares to make setting up boards faster and easier. To create sub-boards, I simply taped individual squares together and then used laminating paper to hold the squares in place.

The pieces also were something of a difficulty, and we were unable to reproduce them according to the author's descriptions. However, Fergus was able to use "friendly plastic" to mold various appendages that he was able to use to convert standard chess pieces to the various unusual Vyrémorn chess pieces.

The pictures for the next set (Quang Trung Chess) are here. The pictures for the previous set (Centennial Chess) are here.
