DAN+, Different Augmented Knights
An Augmented Knight is an ordinary Knight to which a simple
extra power is added. It is ever so slightly stronger than a Rook,
except that
the Rook might possibly be stronger
in open endgames with pawns on both sides of the board.
Standard Augmented Knights
There are four standard Augmented Knights, fully tested and
approved for tournament play.
NA
A two-square diagonal leap
is added to the power of the Knight; for
example, from e4 the NA can go to f6, g5, g3, f2, d2, c3, c5, d6,
g6, g2, c6, or c2,
in all cases either to move or to capture.
It can go from e4 to c6 even if d5 is occupied.
NF
A single diagonal step
is added to the power of the Knight; for
example, from e4 the NA can go to f6, g5, g3, f2, d2, c3, c5, d6,
f5, f3, d3, or d5,
in all cases either to move or to capture.
ND
A two-square leap in the Rookwise directions
is added to the power of the Knight; for
example, from e4 the NA can go to f6, g5, g3, f2, d2, c3, c5, d6,
e6, g4, e2, or c4,
in all cases either to move or to capture.
It can go from e4 to e6 even if e5 is occupied.
NW
A single step in the Rookwise directions
is added to the power of the Knight; for
example, from e4 the NA can go to f6, g5, g3, f2, d2, c3, c5, d6,
e5, f4, e3, or d4,
in all cases either to move or to capture.
Experimental Augmented Knights
Many other pieces have the same theoretical value as the Augmented
Knights, and can be substituted in place of them.
These pieces are still experimental.
-
LW
A single step in the Rookwise directions is added to the power of
the "long Knight"; for
example, from e4 the LW can go to
f7, h5, h3, f1, d1, b3, b5, d7,
e5, f4, e3, or d4.
The LW is experimental, but very likely to become standard.
[August 1996] Reject LW because of instant win: 1. (LW)a1-b4; threat
(LW)b4-e5 wins Queen; threat (LW)b4-b5 wins Ra8.
- NH
A true Augmented Knight, with the added power being simply one step
further than the ND;
for example, from e4, the added power goes to e7, h4, e1, or b4.
The NH is experimental, but likely.
- WFA
Moves like a King with an added two-square diagonal jump;
from e4, it leaps to e5, f5, g6, f4, f3, g2, e3, and so on.
- HFA
From e4, to d5, f5, f3, d3, c6, g6, g2, c2, e7, h4, e1, or b4;
highly experimental.
- HWD
A three-square X-Ray Rook, in effect; from e4, it leaps to
e5, e6, e7, f4, g4, h4, e3, e2, e1, d4, c4, or b4.
Highly experimental; very clumsy in the opening, very deadly once it
gets its opportunity.
